Ethernet, IP VPN or ATM you decideEthernet, IP VPN or ATM you decide

Do you need control over your network or would you prefer to leave it in someone else's hands?

IP VPN

IP VPN is a managed service, so it would suit your organisation if you don't have in-house expertise or resources to control your own networks. Costs will typically be higher than for Ethernet, and you will be reliant on your provider for its efficiency, security, reliability and scalability.

However, IP VPN will benefit your organisation if it has a large number of small sites, or home or mobile workers who gain access to the network via dial-up or DSL.

ATM

ATM is an established WAN technology. ATM has long been standardised. It offers effective interconnections to ensure global reach and connectivity with partner suppliers keeping the consistency of all features regardless of access technology or partner used. The related quality of service and bandwidth is guaranteed for each permanent virtual circuit (PVC).

Ethernet - Total control

If your company has decided to self-manage and you have made a significant investment in your own technology, Ethernet is the way to go. It gives you total control over your network, with a level of features and services that is evolving to match those of IP VPN.

It's possible to have the best of both worlds. Combine the speed and flexibility of Ethernet for core sites, such as data centres and head offices, with the ability for IP VPN to effectively deliver a more distributed, lower bandwidth service to multiple offices and home workers.

Cheaper, simpler, high speed connections

You should consider an Ethernet WAN based solution if you're commissioning new infrastructure, expanding your presence within the market, or seeking to upgrade existing ATM connections.

Your LAN is based on it. Ethernet interfaces are usually cheaper than those for ATM. Creating a WAN solution using Ethernet means the interface is simpler to introduce and manage. The equipment and protocols are the same which leads to a reduction in specialist resource needed to deliver high-speed connections for you to do business.

This means lower up-front investment costs and lower running costs.

Technology Comparison at a glance

ATM/Frame Relay

  • 16Kbps - 155Mbps
  • Equipment upgrade typically 2Mbps, 45Mbps, 155Mbps
  • Costly ATM/FR interface
  • Hub and spoke / partial mesh
  • Well supported interconnect technology (global support)
  • DSL support
  • Logically separated by Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs)
  • Class of Service (CoS) with bandwidth guarantees
  • Specialist knowledge required to troubleshoot
  • Bursty bandwidth

Ethernet

  • 2Mbps - 10Gbps
  • Equipment upgrade steps typically 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 10Gbps
  • Routers usually supplied with Ethernet interface
  • Multiple topologies
  • Poor support for ethernet tails in developing countries
  • Ethernet First Mile (E.SDSL)
  • Logically separated by VLAN's - still secure
  • Class of Service (some providers including COLT)
  • Make use of standard IT skills
  • Low cost per Mbps

IP VPN

  • 64Kbps - 622Mbps
  • Often uses Ethernet as access technology so benefits from Ethernet upgrade path
  • Any to any, hub and spoke
  • Well supported offnet access (global support)
  • DSL support
  • May be logically separated by IP Sec to enhance security
  • Class of Service (CoS)
  • Outsourced network management - rely on service provider to make changes
  • Reduced time and resources managing network = cost saving but premium priced
  • IP only
  • Dial up and access via the Internet provides support for mobile and homeworkers

Ethernet

  • 2Mbps - 10Gbps
  • Equipment upgrade steps typically 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 10Gbps
  • Multiple topologies
  • Poor support for Ethernet tails in developing countries
  • Ethernet first mile (E.SDSL)
  • Logically separated by VLANs - still secure
  • Class of Service (CoS)
  • Managed in house - easy to make changes to configuration
  • Low cost per Mbps
  • Transparent to L3 protocols
  • Fixed access only
